The what and why of coaching
The International Coaching Federation defines Coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential.”
People come to coaching for a variety of reasons, a new challenge, an opportunity they want to seize or a challenge they want to overcome.
Coaching is built on the philosophy that every person is uniquely resourced to solve their own problems and achieve their own goals.
A coach acts as a confidential thinking partner, providing a safe space to support high potential people to unlock new thinking. Using an evidence-based process, the coach supports the coachee to enhance self- awareness and develop strategies that accelerate people towards a goal.
Coaching focuses on how people can move forward towards a goal. Unlike counselling or psychology, coaching is not therapeutic – it is not about diagnosing a person or fixing them or examining their past. Unlike mentoring it is not about advice or the coach sharing their own ideas.
